Gerrit Rietveld

1888 Utrecht
1964 Utrecht

Gerrit Rietveld learned the trade of furniture maker at a young age in his father’s workshop. Later he apprenticed as an architect and came into contact with members of the De Stijl art movement.
Rietveld developed into a versatile artist with a strong vision, his architecture and furniture designs became world famous. In the early days, Rietveld designs a lot of furniture based on an investigative idea in which construction, form and material play an important role.
Later, the furniture is often created as part of the architectural assignments, such as the Steltman chair that he designs for the jeweler of the same name in The Hague. Almost every design by Rietveld has a special story associated with it.
