Youla Chapoval was born in Kiev in 1919. In 1924 he moved with his family to Paris. Chapoval studied at the academies in Marseille and Toulouse, where his style altered from figurative to pure abstract. He had exhibitions at various galleries in Paris. Chapoval was one of the most promising members of the abstract art world when he died in Paris in 1951 at the age of thirty-two. In his short career he nevertheless produced 800 works. In 1964 there was a retrospective in the Musée d’Art Moderne de la ville de Paris.
