César Domela Nieuwenhuis was born in Amsterdam in 1900. He began with painting at the age of 19 and became a member of the November Gruppe in Berlin in 1923 with abstract work. Domela moved to Paris in 1934, where he came into contact with Arp and was involved with the Plastique magazine. He also participated in the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles and founded the Centre des Recherches group in 1946. Domela used various materials in his paintings and reliefs. The gouaches were often preliminary studies. One could call his work more or less rhythmic geometric-abstract.
