From 1932 to 1937 he studied at the Edinburgh Academy of Art. After his studies he moved to Paris where he was taught by Fernand Léger. During his time in Paris he got to know many members of the Cobra movement. Together with them he also participated in the exhibitions of Cobra.

His work is initially abstract expressionist, with clear influences from Paul Klee.
From the fifties his work becomes more geometric, with large, round shapes.

From 1964 to 1975 he worked as a department head at the Art Academy in Birmingham.
