Gust Romijn was born in Noordwijkerhout in 1922. He was a member of the Venstergroep, the Liga Nieuw Beelden and Rotterdam’s Zerogroep. Until 1982 he was a prominent artist in Rotterdam, serving as artistic director of the yearly “Poetry and Film International”, as chief staff teacher for sculpture at the Rotterdam Academy of the Arts and as head of the object and projects division at the Vrije Academie in The Hague. His most famous works are two large bronze sculptures in Rotterdam and one for Schiphol airport in 1967. Romijn’s work is very versatile in technique and in the placement of his works. At the dykes of Ouwerkerk he did a monumental work in 2003 to commemorate the great flooding of 1953.
