At the age of 14, he was already working for a firm of stonemasons. Later he attended Rotterdams Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten.
Van Stuivenberg also always drew, in addition to sculpture. He was a member of the Vrij Beelden and Creatie groups.
Despite museum purchases, by Sandberg amongst others, Van Stuivenberg enjoyed only moderate appreciation during his working life. His work is principally abstract sculpture in stone or wood.
