“From object to environment: art as part of everyday life.”

This viewing room brings together a curated selection of works by Ger Gerrits, Hans Ittmann, Josef Ongenae, and André Volten, who were involved in the founding of Liga Nieuw Beelden. Furthermore, work by Joost Baljeu, Bennes, van Bottenburg, Corneille, Wim de Haan, Frieda Hunziker, Hussem, Kolthoff, Wim Motz, Gust Romijn, Wim Sinemus, Wim Strijbosch, Shinkichi Tajiri, Harry Verburg, André van der Vossen, and Theo Wolvecamp is on display. These artists reflect the ideas and ambitions of Liga Nieuw Beelden (1955–1969), an interdisciplinary collective that sought to unify art, architecture, and design into a shared spatial and social experience. Rather than defining a single style, Liga Nieuw Beelden was driven by a collective ambition: to move beyond the autonomous artwork. Through varying degrees of collaboration, synthesis, and integration, its members explored how art could extend into space—engaging directly with architecture and the built environment. Art was no longer conceived as an isolated object, but as part of a larger, interconnected whole. This approach materialized in experimental exhibitions that functioned as spatial propositions. Visitors were invited to move freely through constructed environments—early models for a different way of living with art. These “demonstrations” proposed a world in which artistic form, spatial design, and daily life would converge. The works presented here can be approached in a similar way. While each piece holds its own formal integrity, its full resonance emerges in relation to space, context, and other works. For collectors, this opens up a perspective in which acquisition is not only about the object itself, but about its potential to shape and activate an environment. Some works in this viewing room are in private collections. The other works are available. For further details, including pricing, provenance, and placement advice, please enquire directly via the platform. By bringing these works together, Creatie Art positions the legacy of Liga Nieuw Beelden not as a closed historical chapter, but as an ongoing proposition—one that continues to challenge how art can inhabit and transform everyday life.
